  15. <p>     DIED. LEON THEREMIN, 97, inventor and musician; in Moscow. The
  16. theremin, heard on the Beach Boys' Good Vibrations and in science-fiction
  17. movie classics such as Forbidden Planet, was one of the earliest
  18. electronic instruments, and its penetrating, eerie tone fascinated
  19. listeners from Lenin to Albert Einstein as Theremin toured Europe
  20. and America in the 1920s and '30s. Returning to the Soviet Union
  21. in 1938, he became one of Stalin's victims and spent seven years
  22. in prison, only going abroad again in the late '80s to make
  23. appearances in Paris and Stockholm before a generation to whom
  24. he was a legend.
