- <p> DIED. LEON THEREMIN, 97, inventor and musician; in Moscow. The
- theremin, heard on the Beach Boys' Good Vibrations and in science-fiction
- movie classics such as Forbidden Planet, was one of the earliest
- electronic instruments, and its penetrating, eerie tone fascinated
- listeners from Lenin to Albert Einstein as Theremin toured Europe
- and America in the 1920s and '30s. Returning to the Soviet Union
- in 1938, he became one of Stalin's victims and spent seven years
- in prison, only going abroad again in the late '80s to make
- appearances in Paris and Stockholm before a generation to whom
- he was a legend.
